What are Ligaments?

Ligaments are tough, elastic bands of fibrous tissue that connect bones to other bones in a joint. They help to stabilize and strengthen joints, preventing them from moving too far or in the wrong direction. Ligaments are composed of collagen fibers, which are incredibly strong and durable. They are also flexible, allowing them to stretch and recoil as needed. Ligaments are found throughout the body, in all joints from the neck and spine to the knees and ankles.

When ligaments are stretched beyond their normal range of motion, they can become damaged or torn. This is commonly referred to as a sprain. What are Tendons?

This gives them greater strength and stiffness, but also makes them less elastic than ligaments. Tendons are found throughout the body, from the fingers and hands to the feet and toes.

Tendons in the lower leg, for example, work together to keep the ankle stable and prevent it from rolling inward or outward. Tendons can become injured or inflamed due to overuse, trauma, or certain medical conditions. Tendinitis, for example, is a common condition that occurs when a tendon becomes inflamed and painful. Treatment for tendon injuries typically involves rest, ice, compression, and physical therapy to help strengthen the affected area.

Functions of Ligaments

The primary function of ligaments is to provide stability to joints. They act as strong reinforcing bands that help to limit the range of motion of a joint, preventing it from moving too far in any given direction. This is particularly important in weight-bearing joints such as the knees and ankles, where the forces involved can be significant. Ligaments also help to control the speed and direction of movement, which can reduce the risk of injury and improve athletic performance.
